 pipes  is a member of the series of ethanesulfonic acid buffers, which is called 1-4-piperazine diethyl sulfonic acid in Chinese. It is one of the series of ethanesulfonic acid buffer reagents developed by good in 1960. It has some important characteristics common to good's buffer, such as medium pKa, maximum water solubility and minimum solubility in all other solvents, minimum salt effect, minimum change force of PKA with temperature (pipes are insoluble in water) chemical and enzymatic stability, minimum absorption of visible or ultraviolet spectral range, easy synthesis and other characteristics.

The effective buffer range of pipes is pH 6.1-7.5, PKA = 6.8 (25 ℃). Its PKA is close to the physiological pH and is suitable for cell culture.
