Among various new battery systems, aqueous zinc-ion batteries have attracted extensive attention of researchers due to their high safety, low cost, and high theoretical capacity (820 mAh g-1 or 5855 mAh cm-3). Although aqueous zinc-ion batteries generally use neutral or weakly acidic zinc salt solutions as electrolytes, the corrosion of zinc metal in electrolytes still limits the development of batteries, and the unavoidable dendrite growth during cycling is also serious. Affect the normal use of zinc-ion batteries.
From the perspective of adjusting the solvated structure of Zn2+, a research group from a certain university has proposed a new type of electrolyte additive, bis(2-hydroxyethyl)iminotris(hydroxymethyl)methane complexing agent, based on the concept of "coordination chemistry". (BIS-TRIS). BIS-TRIS is rich in hydroxyl functional groups, which are expected to interact with Zn2+ to change its solvation structure and realize a highly reversible zinc anode. Let’s take a look at the demonstration results in the experimental process.

From the above figure, it can be seen that a large number of air bubbles appeared on the surface of the Zn foil during the cycling process, which indicated that the side reaction of hydrogen evolution was accompanied by vigorous Zn deposition. The occurrence of hydrogen evolution reaction not only reduces the Coulombic efficiency of the zinc deposition/stripping process, but also increases the internal pressure of the battery and accelerates the damage of the battery, which greatly affects the service life of the battery. In contrast, no obvious bubble generation was observed after the zinc foil was cycled in the solution containing BIS-TRIS.
Under the cycling condition of 1 mA cm-2/1 mAh cm-2, the ZnSulfate electrolyte battery exhibited a short circuit after 220 h of cycling, which may be related to the uncontrolled dendrite growth during the zinc deposition. In contrast, the battery with BIS-TRIS electrolyte still exhibited excellent cycling stability after 1200 h of cycling without significant voltage fluctuations. When the current density and capacity were increased to 5 mA cm-2 and 5 mAh cm-2, respectively, the stable cycle time of the battery with BIS-TRIS electrolyte was still more than 600 h, while the zinc sulfate battery was short-circuited within 50 h. .
This work demonstrates the role of BIS-TRIS complexing agent in realizing dendrite-free, long-life zinc metal anodes. BIS-TRIS is rich in hydroxyl functional groups. When zinc ions in solution coordinate with hydroxyl groups, the larger steric hindrance of the zinc-complex can increase its nucleation barrier, reduce the kinetics of zinc ion deposition and effectively slow down the deposition process. concentration polarization. At the same time, the BIS-TRIS additive partially replaces the water in the solvated structure, so that the water content on the surface of the metal anode can be effectively regulated, which plays an important role in enhancing the electrochemical/chemical stability of Zn metal.
