Details
Luminol, commonly known as luminol, is a luminol reagent used in criminal investigation. Luminol reagent is a mixture of luminol and hydrogen peroxide. The blood contains iron. Iron will accelerate the oxidation process of luminol and hydrogen peroxide. However, during the oxidation reaction, part of the energy released will exist in the form of photons and can emit fluorescence for 30 seconds in the dark.
How sensitive is luminol to detect blood
Luminol is very sensitive to detect blood. Even if a drop of blood drops into a large bathtub, it can be detected. Wash the scene to a level that luminol cannot detect. Unless there is no detection, as long as the detection is done, there is basically no possibility that it cannot be detected.
How did the medical examiner detect luminescent ammonia
Spray luminescent ammonia evenly on the surface of an object in a dark room. A small amount of active oxidant will make luminescent ammonia emit visible blue light. The glow lasts only about 30 minutes, but investigators can record the effect with long exposure photos. Crime scene investigators must spray luminescent ammonia evenly to avoid misleading results, because trace blood is more concentrated in areas sprayed with more luminescent ammonia. The luminous intensity of luminescent ammonia does not indicate the amount of blood or other activators, but only the distribution of these substances in the explored area.
Dry or decaying blood can make luminescent ammonia glow more strongly
In 1937, German forensic scientist speicht conducted extensive research on the detection of blood at the crime scene. In 1939, two American Pathologists made three important observations on luminescent ammonia: Although the luminescent ammonia test is not deterministic, it can quickly detect large areas with suspicious materials; Compared with fresh blood, dry blood or rotten blood can make luminescent ammonia glow more strongly; If the luminescence disappears, the luminescence can be reconstructed by using a fresh luminescent ammonia hydrogen peroxide solution, so that the dried blood can emit light repeatedly.
